Weekend Programs/Retreats

And the Word Became Book:  A Journey into the Heart of the Qur'an
- September 5-6, 2008
Program begins Friday, 7:00 P.M. and concludes Saturday, 4:00 P.M.
It is said that for Muslims the Word did not become flesh, it became book, an indication of the central position occupied by the Qur’an in the lives of Muslims. While Christians are familiar with the Hebrew Scriptures, most have little exposure to the Qur’an. Even those who attempt to read the Qur’an in translation find it difficult to penetrate. This weekend gathering is a journey to the heart of the Qur’an. We will explore its principal themes, particularly those held in common with Christianity, as well as central figures such as Abraham, Moses, Jesus, Mary, and John the Baptist. We will consider, also, Muslim attitudes towards Scripture. In the spirit of St. Francis’s historic encounter with the Egyptian sultan in 1219, we will be joined by a member of the Muslim community for conversation and prayer.

We Are the Soil Where God's Life Grows
- September 12-14, 2008
Retreat begins Friday, 7:00 P.M. and concludes Sunday, 12:00 Noon.
As the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there until they have watered the earth, so shall my word succeed in the purpose for which I sent it.  (Is. 55: 10-11)
Autumn is a rich and complex time for the earth. As the trees let go of summer foliage, the earth receives their gift into herself as a blessing and a promise of the new life to come after the winter. This autumn retreat is an opportunity to honor the soil of our hearts, in whatever condition it may be, to receive the blessings of what needs to be let go, and to allow God’s promise of new life to be realized in us.
