Name
- February 27, 2012
5:15-8:00 p.m.
Palm Sunday 2012 will mark the 800th Anniversary of Clare of
Assisi's becoming the first Franciscan woman. The early

and icon provides a framework to analyze Clare's role in her
tradition, a role arising from the original Franciscan inspiration
and the effects of papal oversight of the 13th century Poor
Sisters.

Clare
of Assisi's Unconditional Response to a World of Violence:
The Embrace of Radical Poverty
-March 20, 2012
5:15-8:00 p.m.
Clare of Assisi lived in a world full of violence. This
program will explore Clare's response to this world of violence by
focusing on key episodes in her life: Clare's peaceful
resistance to her family's violent opposition to her adoption of a
Franciscan lifestyle, her heroic role in the defense of Assisi as
the city faced attack by enemy forces, and her insistence on
embracing a simple life of absolute poverty in spite of papal
opposition. Through these encounters with violence, Clare models for
us a transforming peaceful presence and offers insights regarding an
appropriate Christian response to the violence of our own world.
